ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Communities in rural Alaska could be receiving additional funding for the Village Public Safety Officer programs.
State lawmakers approved more than $1 million toward salaries and new positions.
The hourly base rate for a VPSO will increase from $16.55 cents to $21, according to the legislation, and 15 positions around the state will be added.
The changes resulted from work by a task force established to research ways of improving the statewide public safety program.
Gov. Sarah Palin must approve the VPSO budget increase.
