JUNEAU, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin on Sunday named Democrat Tim Grussendorf to the open state Senate seat representing the Juneau area, snubbing the choice of the local party.

Grussendorf's selection must be approved by Senate Democrats. He would replace Kim Elton, who resigned earlier this month for a job in the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Juneau Democrats forwarded only the name of state Rep. Beth Kerttula for the position, and Palin asked anyone who wanted the job to apply to her office. Thirteen did, including Kerttula.
