ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Those planning on heading to the backcountry this holiday weekend need to be aware of high avalanche danger.
The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center says wind, rain and new snowfall have created loose snowpacks on steeper slopes.
Eight inches of new snow fell in Girdwood over the past 24 hours and 10 inches fell in Turnagain Pass.
The avalanche center says natural and human-triggered avalanches are likely.
If you're looking for a place to practice your beacon rescue skills, the beacon park is open at the Alyeska Resort.
