ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- For one Alaska mother, the new year brought a very prompt bundle of joy.

Kristine Bennett gave birth to Anchorage's first baby of the year Friday at the Alaska Native Medical Center. Bennett went into labor at 11 p.m. on New Year's Eve. Baby Michael Gary Bennett Jr., 19 inches long and 8 pounds, arrived at 1:34 a.m.

Bennett, who has three other sons, came to Anchorage from Nuiqsut to have the baby.

"And then, after he was born, I called home and said, ‘I got your baby brother,'" Bennett said. "And then my four-year-old says, ‘Can you send him home? I love him.'"

Michael was named after Bennett's brother, who died in a snowmachine accident.
