ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A wreck involving at least five cars, including an Alaska State Trooper vehicle, shut down the southbound lanes of the Parks Highway two miles south of Wasilla on Monday just after noon.

A Channel 2 News reporter saw five or six vehicles in the ditch, one of which was on fire and put out by fire personnel.

The southbound lanes remained closed for nearly three hours, and troopers reopened the highway just after 3 p.m.

The cause of the collisions is under investigation.

A trooper was stopped on the side of the highway to offer assistance to a car in the ditch but found no one in the car. When he climbed back into his truck, he was rear-ended by a different vehicle.

That vehicle went off the roadway and caught fire.

The driver and another person involved in the wreck were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The trooper was checked at the scene and not taken to the hospital, as initially reported.
