JUNEAU, Alaska -- Legislative leaders are casting doubt on Gov. Sean Parnell's merit scholarship program moving forward this session. The plan's cost and scope remain unresolved, with the Legislature weeks from adjourning.
Parnell proposed setting aside $400 million as an endowment for in-state tuition or professional training. While his focus has been on student merit, he's been open to addressing the issue of unmet financial need for students who qualify on merit.
Some lawmakers don't think that goes far enough; others question scholarships for students whose parents can afford to pay for their children's education.
