ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- State troopers are searching for snowmachiner Charles Palmer V, who went missing in the mountains near Talkeetna about 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Palmer, 30, was part of a five-rider group in the Bald Mountain area. Friends say they were riding back to their cabin and when they last saw Palmer, he was heading in the wrong direction. They looked for Palmer but were unable to find him.

Troopers joined the search Sunday afternoon and found Palmer's snowmachine stuck near the Sheep River -- but not Palmer.

Two to four inches of new snow had covered Palmer's tracks, and troopers hope to bring in helicopters once the weather clears up.

"Hopefully he's got his wits about him, he's not wandered off too far and we can find him soon," said troopers spokesperson Beth Ipsen.

Troopers are searching an area of about 100 square miles.
