Decision on coal mining in Palmer delayed by borough

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Mat-Su Borough has delayed a decision on whether to grant Usibelli Coal Mine a new lease on borough land.

The company wants to build a road north of Palmer to access its Wishbone Hill mine lease.

Usibelli officials said they plan to drill exploratory holes at the site to determine whether they should move forward with mining there.

But during public testimony, many residents from the Buffalo Mine Road area asked the borough to deny the permit and stop the mine.

The Assembly voted to hear more discussion on the lease at their June 15 meeting.
