ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Eagle River state Rep. Nancy Dahlstrom, R-Eagle River, announced Friday afternoon that she will be leaving the Legislature. A release from the House Majority says Dahlstrom will be taking a position with the Parnell administration as a Senior Advisor for Military Affairs.

Dahlstrom's district covers Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson, Government Hill, a section of Muldoon Road, parts of North Eagle River and the Glenn Highway. Dahlstrom was appointed to the seat in 2002 when Lisa Murkowski was appointed to the U.S. Senate by then-Gov. Frank Murkowski.

"Serving in the Alaska Legislature for the past eight sessions has been a rewarding and great experience… I value the relationships that I have developed and am grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve the people of District 18," she said in the release.

Dahlstrom served as House Rules Committee Chair during the second half of the most recent legislative session, and has also served as co-Chair for the Joint Armed Services Committee and a member of the House Special committee on Military and Veterans' Affairs, as well as Finance subcommittees on Military and Veterans' Affairs.

"It has been an honor to represent the great men and women serving in the armed forces in Alaska. I look forward to continued work with our local and national military leaders, the congressional delegation and community leaders as we strive to acquire future missions and build infrastructure that will benefit not only Alaska, but the United States," she said in the release.

Dahlstrom said the country will face another round of Base Realignment and Closure reviews in the next few years and that it is critical that Alaska maintain its bases.

Her new position with the governor's office will include working with the Alaska Military Force Advocacy and Structure Team. She begins her new position at the end of the month.

"I want to thank my constituents for trusting me to help solve problems and work on issues that are important to them. The State House office will continue to be open to assist them," she said.
