ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A watchdog group in Alaska says it understands what the people along the Gulf Coast are going through right now.

The Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council began a two-day long meeting Thursday in Valdez, and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a big topic of concern.

The group's director says the council will be sending staff down to Louisiana to learn from the recovery efforts there.

"There are certainly a lot of folks on our board and a lot of community members around that remember the Exxon Valdez spill here and certainly feel some empathy in their hearts for the folks who are being impacted by this spill down in the Gulf," Mark Swanson said.

The citizens' advisory council was established after the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989 and works with the oil industry to try to prevent oil spills in Alaska waters.
