ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska says it will go ahead with a lawsuit to prevent further raids of Anchorage homeless camps.
ACLU Alaska director Jeffrey Mittman says they had hoped to reach an agreement with the municipality over the destruction of the camps and disposal of property belonging to the homeless.
The city has 20 days to respond to the lawsuit, which was filed Friday.
A spokeswoman for Mayor Dan Sullivan says the mayor had hoped the disagreement would not end up in a lawsuit.
The ACLU recommended that homeless camps residents be given notice before the camps were declared a nuisance.
At least three camps have been raided since July.
