ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A shooting at Anchorage's Valley of the Moon Park put one man in the hospital Sunday night. Police found 21-year-old Saroeun Muon lying on the pavement with multiple gunshot wounds about 6 p.m.

Muon was barbecuing with his family when he was shot at the popular park near Downtown, which was filled with people. Many witnesses say they're still in shock.

"There had been an altercation between multiple individuals that turned physical, and then a gun was pulled out and used to shoot one of the participants in the altercation," said Anchorage Police Department Sgt. Kevin Vandegriff.

According to APD, Muon was shot several times in the torso. Many say they thought the gunshots were firecrackers, and only later learned it was something else.

"As we went out to the street, we saw a group of guys running down the street here ," said witness Richard Watkins. "And it looks like one actually had -- was actually packing a gun away, and was jumping into a vehicle."

Dozens of people, including young kids, were enjoying the Memorial Day weekend and barbecuing close to where the shooting happened. Parents are shocked that it happened right in front of their eyes.

"I've never seen nothing like that when I was that age, and all the kids were just screaming and crying," said Irene, a mom who didn't want to give her last name. "They've seen it all -- just scary."

Police say the investigation is in its early stages and no one is in custody -- but officials say with a number of witnesses, they have a good idea of who the suspects are.

Police say Muon was taken to a hospital, where he is undergoing surgery. He was able to talk with officers beforehand.

No suspects have yet been detained or arrested, and detectives are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information about the shooting should call APD immediately at 786-8900.
