ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Police have arrested a man for a shooting that took place Wednesday morning.

Ryan Angelo Malapit Sargento, 28, has been charged with first degree and second degree murder and tampering with physical evidence.

Anchorage police responded to a fatal shooting in a parking between two apartment complexes in Mountain View. The shooting took place around around 6:30 a.m.

"We found one person deceased, he is outdoors, he is not in an apartment," said Anchorage Police Lt. Dave Parker.

Police identified the man Wednesday as 30-year-old John Lee Taylor, of Anchorage.

Police say witnesses reported seeing a man wearing a camo jacket fleeing the area.

A K-9 unit that was on its way home after a shift diverted to the scene and was able to track a suspect matching the description down. The man, now identified as Sargento, was reportedly hiding in a shed a few blocks from the shooting and is now in custody, but has not been charged.

"We had a good track, and we found the suspect hiding in the shed in the 400 block of Mumford, a couple blocks west of where the homicide occurred," said APD officer Lonnie Brown, the dog's handler.

"Without the K-9 here there was no way they'd be able to find that guy hiding in the shed. Because he was a couple blocks away, hidden," Brown said.

Police say that witnesses told them Sargento and Taylor were in a verbal argument over the ownership of a cell phone when Sargento fired at Taylor with a handgun and then pistol whipped him before fleeing the scene, discarding the gun and hiding.

Police are still investigating and are looking for anybody who may have witnessed the shooting.
