Glenn Highway head-on collision kills 1 near Eagle River

July 01, 2010

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — One man was killed and two others were injured in a head-on collision on the Glenn Highway Thursday afternoon.

Anchorage police say an EMT driving southbound on the Glenn Highway witnessed the crash between North Eagle River and Birchwood at about 5:25 p.m. She told police that just before the accident, she saw the driver of the sedan slump over his steering wheel, with his hands dropping from the wheel.

"A vehicle was observed by an EMT who was driving parallel in the inbound lanes, was observed to jump the median and ran head on into a outbound vehicle," said APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker.

Police say the man was dead when the EMT got to the car.

A man and his 16-year-old son, who were in the northbound Subaru Forester struck by the sedan after it crossed the highway median, were taken to an Anchorage hospital. Parker says they are expected to be all right.

Police say it's still not clear what happened to the driver of the sedan.

"Either he had fallen asleep or he had had some kind of medical crisis," Parker said. "The family going outbound was a father and a 16-year-old boy; both of them were transported to hospital. The individual who jumped the median is deceased here at the scene."

The Glenn Highway northbound was shut down for hours, and traffic was rerouted to the Old Glenn Highway. Northbound traffic remained slow for most of the evening.

Police are asking drivers to take it slow and use caution as they hit the road this holiday weekend. Drivers are urged not to drink and drive, or drive when tired.
