ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A high-school football season is like a political race: drama, name-calling and very few Miller-defeats-Murkowski-style upsets. The featured game of Week 5 was more like a Kennedy-Nixon clash of titans.
No. 3-ranked Chugiak hosted No. 2-ranked Service at the Tom Huffer, Sr. Stadium Friday. Both teams are 3 and 1 overall, 2 and 1 in the Cook Inlet Conference.
A first-quarter Cougars drive saw Megan Dotten line up a field goal, only to see it blocked -- just like an attempted kick in a Chugiak-Service game last year.
Service was on a roll by the final minute of the first half, with Villiamu Aukusitino sneaking the ball in on 4th and goal, bringing the score to 13-0 Service lead.
A third-quarter play saw Service’s Michael McCrae going solo on the Mustangs for 36 of his 167 yards.
Chugiak rallied to tie the game but Service finally won 30-27, on a field goal scored by female kicker Taylor Bomar.
