'Today Show' wedding winners married on live TV

September 30, 2010|by Channel 2 News staff

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An airman stationed in Alaska and his bride shared their big day on national television Thursday, as NBC’s “The Today Show” threw a wedding for 21-year-old Melissa McMillan and 22-year-old Air Force Senior Airman Jeremy Gebhardt.

Viewers voted on everything at the live-televised wedding from the gown to the rings, the wedding cake and the honeymoon location -- the Turks and Caicos islands in the Caribbean.

Gebhardt is currently stationed in Anchorage and plans to return to the couple's home in Missouri in the spring. The two have been separated for two years because of his tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“We've waited such a long time to do this and we were just excited and comfortable with each other, and that's why it was so calm,” McMillan said.

The couple earned the most votes on Facebook to become the recipients of Thursday's annual wedding giveaway.
