Olvera wins Homer Halibut Jackpot Derby

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Kachemak Bay is home to some of the richest fishing waters in all of Alaska, and a young Fairbanks woman celebrated the state's richest derby payout Thursday.

Jamie Olvera received $40,610 for winning the five-month-long Homer Halibut Jackpot Derby. At 25, she's the youngest champion in derby history and the third-ever female winner.

Olvera caught her winning 277-pounder Aug. 28, with captain Ben Martin aboard the Fringe Benefit.
