UAA sprinters, spikers retain rankings

October 28, 2010|by John Carpenter

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The University of Alaska Anchorage’s cross-country running teams are preparing for the GNAC championships in Yakima, Wash., while its volleyball squad prepares to host games against two teams.

Both sports’ teams will go into action with a pocketful of national
Clout. The men’s running team is ranked eighth in the country in the
U.S. Track and Field Cross-Country Coaches Association poll, up a spot from a week ago.

Meanwhile, the UAA women are holding on tight to their No. 4 natonal ranking, while the volleyball players maintain their No. 8 ranking in the West Region despite absorbing a beatdown last week at Western Washington University.

The Seawolves spikers need to stay in the top eight in the West in order to earn an NCAA tournament berth. They’ll host Montana State-Billings
and Seattle Pacific Thursday and Saturday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

A win over the Seattle Pacific Falcons would be a huge feather in UAA's cap in terms of the region rankings, because SPU is currently ranked second in the West Region.
