Clark student reports attempted abduction

Attempt "strikingly similar" to attempts from last January

December 14, 2010|by Channel 2 News Staff

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage police say a sixth-grade student at Clark Middle School reported an attempted abduction as she walked to school Tuesday morning. Police say the report has “striking similarities” to attempted abductions that occurred in January.

The girl says that as she was walking to school around 7:25 a.m., a man in a silver or gray SUV asked if there was a school nearby and invited her to get in his vehicle. The girl declined and ran away, but slipped and fell. The suspect then ran the SUV over the victim’s foot.

Police say the suspect is described as a light-skinned black male in his early 20s with a thin build, short hair and no facial hair. He was wearing a beige or light tan hoodie, and the SUV is described as silver or gray with tinted windows.

Police were not able to locate a suspect or vehicle matching the description.

In the January abductions, the suspect in one case was described as a tall, light-skinned black male between 18-20 with a dark, smaller-sized SUV with tinted windows, and in another the suspect was described as a black male in his late teens to 20s with facial hair, driving a dark colored SUV.

In two of the three cases, the victims were struck by the vehicle, but neither were seriously injured.

Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact them at 786-8900. To remain anonymous and be eligible for a cash reward, persons can also contact Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP or submit their tip on the secure website at www.anchoragecrimestoppers.com.

Superintendent Carol Comeau issued a statement urging all parents to talk to their children about safe walking practices.

“Remind them that, no matter how cold it is, they should not get into a vehicle with somebody they do not know,” she said.
