Snow probable cause of Christmas Day power outage

December 26, 2010|by Channel 2 News staff

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Heavy snow is the likely culprit in power outages that affected thousands of Eagle River residents on Christmas Day.

According to the Matanuska Electric Association, a breaker at the Briggs substation opened late Saturday on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, possibly from heavy snow load. Linemen had to pass through base security before they were able to fix the problem.

MEA says that nearly 5,000 customers in Eagle River were without power Saturday from 4 p.m. until about 6:30 p.m.
