Solo Denali climber passes the 13,000 foot level

January 14, 2011|By Maria Downey | Channel 2 News

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A Minnesota man has reached the 13,000 foot level of Mt. McKinley and he's blogging about his  dangerous solo climb on his website.

“I am camped out at 12,400 feet, on a very steep pitch,” said climber Lonnie Dupre, in an audio blog updated Friday morning.

Dupre has been sending messages and photos of his adventure to his website via satellite phone.

On Thursday morning, Dupre called Talkeetna to say he had a good night's rest after building a snow cave around the 12,000 foot level and getting out of the wind.

Dupre did not bring a tent and says he intended to build snow caves every day because he would stay warmer that way.

Besides a few aches and pains, Dupre says he’s feeling good.
