Seawolves shut out Gophers on the road for weekend split

January 30, 2011|by Charlie Sokaitis | Channel 2 Sports

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves were on the road in Minnesota Saturday night, looking for a weekend split after Friday night’s 5-1 loss to the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.

It was a different kind of game Saturday, with both sides kept scoreless until the third period. UAA’s Mitch Bruijsten found Matt Bailey, who made a tremendous short-side snipe to score the game’s only goal.

At the other end of the ice, Seawolves coach Dave Shyiak went with Chris Kamal as goalie. The freshman did not disappoint, stopping all 30 shots he faced on the night and earning a first-ever UAA shutout of the Gophers on their home ice.

The 1-0 win gives UAA a weekend split, promoting the Seawolves to a tie for eighth in the WCHA.
