Rogers Park Elementary Class Starts Anti-Panhandling Campaign

February 22, 2011|by Jason Lamb | Channel 2 News

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Many people may not be aware that panhandling is illegal in Anchorage. A Rogers Park Elementary class has found a creative way to spread the word.

You may notice new signs on the sides of some People Mover buses. The signs read, "Panhandling is Illegal. Donate to a local charity instead."

Eight buses carry the anti-panhandling signage. The buses cover routes all around the city.

The idea for the signs came from teacher David Huycke's class after hearing from the director of Bean's Cafe and listening to an Anchorage police officer who visited the class.

"Buses drive around town so a lot of different people can see them," said student Andrew Hull about the decision to put the signs on buses.

The students' plan became a reality with the help of donations from several Anchorage groups.
