ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The UAF Nanooks got off to a successful defense of their Governor's Cup title with a 5-1 win over the UAA Seawolves Friday night at the Carlson Center. The game was tied entering the third period before the Nanooks reeled off four straight goals, including two strikes seven seconds apart.
Brad Gorham notched his first collegiate goal for the Seawolves, 25 seconds into the first period. However, that initial blast represented the only scoring of the night for UAA.
Kevin Petovello scored twice for UAF. His first enabled the Nanooks to even things up at one goal apiece entering the third period.
The game turned when Colton Beck scored at the 8:09 mark of the third. His goal was immediately followed by Andy Taranto's 12th goal of the season at 8:16, giving the Nanooks a 3-1 lead.
UAF takes a one game to none lead into Saturday's second and final Governor's Cup game at Sullivan Arena. The Nanooks will keep the cup with a win or a tie, while the Seawolves must win the game and then prevail in a tie-breaking shootout in order to win back the cup.
