Fur Rondy Appeals To A New Crowd

February 27, 2011|by Jackie Bartz

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Fur Rendezvous is celebrating 76 years in Anchorage.  This weekend thousands attended the festivities, including dogsled racing, a carnival and fur auction.  But the annual event almost didn’t make it to 76.

“The board was sitting in a room and this was, this was in August 4 years ago, and we were voting to close the doors,” said Fur Rondy President Gary Hufford during an interview.

Hufford said 4 years ago Rondy was struggling for money because attendees became bored of the same old attractions.  The board began focusing on events that attracted people in their 20’s and 30’s.

The “Rondy Running of the Reindeer” was an idea that came up on the KWHL 106.5 Bob & Mark Show.  It quickly became one of Rondy’s biggest draws, attracting over a thousand people in 2010.

But even with all the new events, old events still draw crowds.

“The Alaska experience.  It doesn’t get more Alaskan than watching some sled dog racing, and drinking hot chocolate and freezing your butt off,” said Rondy spectator Emily Dunlea.
