HOUSTON, Alaska — A recall petition was filed Wednesday morning in an effort to oust Houston Mayor Virgie Thompson.

The 10 residents who signed the recall petition accuse Thompson of embezzlement. They claim what while Thompson was out-of-state last November, she still filled out her timecard and accepted a paycheck.

Thompson was selected to serve as mayor by fellow council members. If recalled from the council, she automatically loses her position as mayor.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor James Johansen is facing assault charges. Eyewitnesses allege Johansen threatened a 75-year-old man during a city council meeting.

According to court documents Johansen was charged with fourth-degree assault, which involves causing fear of injury. He was not taken into custody and is scheduled to be arraigned April 14 in Palmer Court.
