ANCHORAGE, Alaska — One of Alaska's most lucrative fisheries is over, and fishermen are still waiting to see how much money they will net from their catch.
Commercial fishermen pulled in 19,636 tons of Sitka Herring Sac Roe, according to a press release from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The final opening was on Saturday.
The Department estimates fishermen netted 3,200 tons in about two and a half hours. The primary market for the roe is Japan, where it is considered a high-end gift item given around the New Year.
