ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An Anchorage man fell into a Midtown lake just after 11 a.m. Monday, but survived after good Samaritans came to his rescue.

Witnesses say Andrew Weare, 62, walked onto University Lake to inspect a dead beaver, then crashed through the thin ice. Eric Nordhougen, 33, and a second man ran onto the lake with sticks to pull him out.

"He would not let go of the ice," Nordhougen said. "He was just hanging on, and then eventually we laid down and pulled him out."

The man was brought ashore near the Springhill Suites Anchorage University Lake hotel, and an ambulance then took him to the hospital. His condition is not yet known.
