ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gerald Coleman posted a shutout for the Alaska Aces, on their way to a 2-0 Game 2 win over the Idaho Steelheads in the Western Conference Semifinals Saturday at the Sullivan Arena.

Two second-period goals from the Scotts Howes and Burt led the way for the Aces.

The two teams were scoreless in the first period, with Idaho putting up a much stronger fight than in Friday’s first period.

In the second period, the Aces struck first, with a goal from Scott Howes just over a minute into the period. The puck bounced around in front of Idaho’s Jerry Kuhn, and Howe’s stick tipped it past the rookie goaltender.

The two teams battled a back-and-forth second period, and with just 25 seconds left in the period, Aces captain Scott Burt sank Alaska’s second tally of the night on the type of play coaches dream of. Alaska defender Bryan Miller sent the puck to Tyler Ruegsegger, on the boards just below the hashmarks. Ruegsegger sent the puck to Burt in the middle, who snuck it through Kuhn’s five-hole to give the Aces the two-goal lead.

The third-period was exciting, and started to heat up physically towards the end, but there were no more goals to be had, even when Idaho pulled their goalie.

Coleman didn’t only get credit for the shutout Saturday, he also was awarded a 2-minute penalty for roughing in the last minute of the game, taking a few swings at Idaho’s Adam Huxley. Even with the 5-on-4 advantage after that, Idaho couldn’t come back.

The Aces now travel to Idaho, where they will face the Steelheads for games 3, 4, and if necessary, 5.
