Defending Champions Advance In State Soccer Tourney

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Kelly Cobb scored five goals to carry Chugiak to a 6-1 rout of Wasilla in the quarterfinals of the ASAA soccer tournament on Thursday. Cobb, bound for Duke in the fall, will lead the Mustangs into Friday's girls semifinal against defending state champion Dimond. The Lynx took down Soldotna to reach the round of four, 4-1.

In Thursday's only one-goal contest, the South Anchorage girls downed West Valley, 1-0 on a goal by Colleen Carpenter with less than five minutes left in regulation. The Wolverines will take on Juneau in the semifinals. The Crimson Bears received a pair of goals from freshman Becca Ord in a 3-0 defeat of Colony.

In the boys tournament, defending champion Juneau also got past Colony in the quarterfinals, 3-0. The Crimson Bears took a 1-0 lead early in the first half and then extended their cushion to two goals on Riley Paul's blast mere seconds before the halftime whistle. Juneau's semifinal opponent will be West Valley. The Wolfpack became the first interior school to win a state quarterfinal contest when they edged Grace Christian, 2-0.

On the other side of the boys bracket, South and Dimond scored matching 2-0 wins over Wasilla and Service, respectively. The Wolverines and Lynx will battle in the other semifinal in a meeting of Cook Inlet Conference powers.
