Tears, Laughter at Memorial For Family Killed in Birchwood Plane Crash

June 02, 2011|By Ted Land | Channel 2 News

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Nearly a week after their small airplane fell out of the sky near Chugiak, killing all five on board; the Greiner family was remembered by friends and relatives during a memorial service in Anchorage, Thursday.

There was hardly room to stand in the Muldoon Community Assembly church, where the Greiners, of Eagle River, were introduced as a Christian family, blessed with four children.

Only one survives.

“I will take care of mom and the rest of the family as they would take care of me. I’m not going to let you down, dad,” said Lorne Greiner, who lost his father Lonn Greiner, 46; his grandmother Carolyn Greiner, 69; and three siblings Glory, 13, Nathan, 11 and Grace, 10.

“She always made sure to give me a hug and a kiss before she left and she did that the day she left also,” said Denine Greiner, speaking about her daughter Grace.

The roughly two hour service was punctuated by moments of profound grief, and at times, humor.

“She would get bananas in her smoothies so her mom wouldn’t drink them,” said a friend of Glory Greiner.

Photos and flowers lined the halls and after the service everyone gathered in the church gymnasium for a meal, provided by the Greiner family.

As for the investigation into what caused the plane crash, The NTSB says it's piecing through the wreckage in Anchorage and that they probably won't reveal any answers for at least six months.
