'Bad Teacher'

July 01, 2011|By Marcus at the Movies

School is out for the summer, and so is the movie “Bad Teacher” starring Cameron Diaz.

Elizabeth, a relatively new teacher, is quitting because she's getting married to a mamma's-boy rich dude. Mom calls it off because teacher has no class. The staff welcomes her back, including teacher-playing Lucy Punch.

“Who are you again?”

“Amy Squirrel”

“Squirrel?”

“Yeah, you know…”

Miss Squirrel is miss goody-two-shoes on the outside, but nuts on the inside, plus a little vindictive like Sue in “Glee.” She and Elizabeth turn rivals over a quirky new teacher played by Justin Timberlake.

Elizabeth's lesson plans include smoking pot and showing movies in class. She doesn't give an F, until....

“Who knows, maybe you'll win the bonus.”

“What bonus?”

New attitude-- new teacher.

Her ulterior motive is to buy new breasts -- of course. She even takes it upon herself to hold a car wash to -- support her cause. Speaking of support, her supporting cast includes Saturday Night Live's Molly Shannon, and a bunch of un-named actors seen in commercials. The 90-some minute movie is kind of like an episode of TV's “The Office,” only cruder-- way cruder.

Diaz provides some funny moments, only because what she says is so out of place given the environment.

One character I wish had been more developed is the gym teacher played by Jason Segel. I wish he would have been featured more.

Instead of “Bad Teacher” see it: “Bad Teacher” C-minus. “Bad Teacher,” no apple, bad movie. Or is it “Bad Teacher,” bad apple, no movie?

The film is rated R.

“Bad Teacher" debuted in second place this past week on the box office chart, with $31 million.

“Cars 2” took the top spot.
