ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage police are looking for an armed robber who struck a Spenard sandwich-shop employee after robbing him at gunpoint Wednesday morning.

APD spokesperson Anita Shell says officers were called to the Subway restaurant on the 1300 block of West Northern Lights Boulevard just after 7 a.m. Although the employee complied with the robber’s demands and gave him an undisclosed amount of money, the robber hit him on the back of the head with his weapon before fleeing.

Police say it appears the 17 year-old employee and the suspect were the only two people in the restaurant. Shell says it is unknown if the robber had a getaway driver.

A spokesman for Subway says the injured employee was treated at the hospital and is going to be okay. But he says Subway is shocked at what happened.

"Its a really tough thing to see happen to a co-worker, to a young employee, and to the company itself. Unfortunately in the world we live in, it's a sort of thing that happens and we do everything to prepare for that sort of thing," said Tim Woolston, Subway spokesman.

Police say the victim did everything right.

"In this situation, the person, the victim did exactly what he should of done. It's uncommon but not rare that they will, despite their compliance, get injured," said Shell.

The robbery suspect, whose race is unknown, is described as a man ranging in height between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches, and weighing about 150 pounds. He was wearing black pants, a puffy jacket with “Phat Farm” in red writing across the back, a hood and a black ski mask.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call APD at 786-8900 or Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP.
