USDA Offers Home Improvement Grants in Rural Alaska

August 03, 2011|by Ashleigh Ebert | Channel 2 News

ANCHORAGE, Alaska —

Low-income rural Alaska residents can now take advantage of grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help improve their homes.

USDA Rural Development officials say the Housing Preservation Grants can be used for weatherization, repairing existing structures, and installing or improving plumbing.

The grants are being provided to intermediaries including local and tribal governments, public agencies and non-profit groups. Those groups will then distribute the funds to qualified homeowners or owners of multi-family rental properties who rent to low-income families.

A separate demonstration program is funding similar repairs to the 39 existing multi-family housing projects funded by USDA Rural Development throughout Alaska.

Applications for both programs are being accepted until Aug. 22. More information about them is available on USDA Rural Development's housing website.

Groups interested in applying for the funds should consult the Federal Register entries on the Housing Preservation Grants and the multi-family housing project repairs.
