Elim Pickup Truck Rollover Kills 2, Injures 4

August 08, 2011|by Chris Klint | KTUU.com

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Two people died and four others were injured near Elim Sunday morning in the rollover crash of a pickup truck, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Nome troopers were notified of the single-vehicle wreck on Moses Point Road, two miles north of Elim, at about 7:45 a.m. Sunday. A Ford Ranger driven by 19-year-old Heather Saccheus with five passengers went out of control and rolled about four times, ejecting all but one occupant -- 16-year-old April Daniels.

Saccheus and Oscar Takak Jr., 19, were declared dead on the scene.

Vehicle owner Arnold Saccheus, 23, and Desiree Murray were flown to Anchorage for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while  John Jemewouk Jr., 19, and Daniels were treated at the Elim clinic for minor injuries.

All six were Elim residents.

Troopers say alcohol and speed were factors in the collision, and nobody in the pickup truck was wearing a seat belt. Next of kin have been notified.

Editor's note: Troopers have clarified that Jemewouk and Daniels were treated at the Elim clinic, not Norton Sound Regional Hospital in Nome.
