Service High School Courts Vandalized

September 04, 2011|by Abby Hancock | Channel 2 News

Anchorage, Alaska — Vandals hit another Anchorage school, this time damaging tennis courts at Service High School. Anchorage School District Superintendent Carol Comeau says the district has had more vandalisms this summer than it has in the past 2-3 years.

The damage was discovered Sunday morning by a member of the school's tennis team who saw the vandalism as he drove past the courts. The student alerted the head coach and today school district maintenance officials examined the damage which included cut nets thrown across the court fence, and poles ripped out of the ground and shoved into the fence.

Comeau says it is discouraging and the district hopes to catch the vandals.

"Parents please know who your kids are with, parents know where they are, and make sure they understand that these are crimes and if they're caught, we're going to pursue restitution and disciplinary action," said Comeau.

The school's tennis team will be unable to use their facilities to practice for a while. There is no word yet on how much it will cost the district to repair the damage.
