Chugiak Football to Forfeit Victories Pending Appeal

September 22, 2011|by Kari Bustamante | Channel 2 Sports

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Chugiak High School football team is appealing punishment as a result of playing with an ineligible homeschooled player, according to Chugiak Head Coach Duncan Shackelford.

Homeschooled students are eligible to play Anchorage School District sports if their schooling is with an ASD sanctioned program. This detail was overlooked in the paperwork, and the player has been active in all Chugiak football games.

In consequence, the team is to forfeit their three victories, thus putting the Mustangs' playoff eligibility in serious jeopardy.

Without the infraction, Chugiak held a record of 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the Cook Inlet Conference.

South Anchorage, Colony and Eagle River all stand to gain a victory pending the appeal. Chugiak is hosting the state semifinals and championship game for the first time this year at Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium.
