Chugiak Football Forfeits Stand

Mustangs Will Not Compete in Playoffs

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — After a morning Alaska School Activities Association meeting left the fate of the Chugiak High football team in the Anchorage School District's hands, the district has decided that the team's three forfeits imposed by ASAA will stand and Chugiak will not be going to the playoffs.

An administrative error allowed an ineligible player to participate during the season, leading to the forfeiture of the team's three wins earlier in the season.

The Alaska School Activities Association Board of Directors decided Monday morning to uphold a prior decision to forfeit a series of Chugiak victories because of the mistake.

The board said that it has never voided a forfeiture decision in cases where an adult made an error.

Board President Billy Strickland said ASD officials, though, could still decide to send Chugiak to this weekend’s playoffs, despite the board's decision.

Superintendent Carol Comeau and her administrative team met and decided that the Cook Inlet Conference's rules, saying a team's win-loss record determines a conference champion, should stand.

Though the district had appealed ASAA's decision imposing the forfeits, Comeau said that since ASAA did not reverse the decision, the rule should stand as is.

"I don’t believe we have any choice but to follow the conference bylaws to determine which teams will go to the playoffs. I still believe the district had a valid appeal, based on the severity of the sanctions for what was an administrative error." Comeau said in a release. "However, since our appeal was not successful, Chugiak’s record means they are not eligible to participate in the playoffs.”
