ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage police say a bicyclist who was riding the wrong way down a one-way street in Fairview is in critical condition after he was struck by an SUV early Saturday morning.
Officers responded shortly after 1:30 a.m. to the intersection of East 15th Avenue and Ingra Street, where a blue 2001 Nissan Pathfinder headed north along Ingra driven by Anchorage resident Shea Valles, 21, had hit 30-year-old Jay McTaggart.
McTaggart was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening head injuries.
Several witnesses, including the two passengers in Valles’ Pathfinder, told officers McTaggart had been headed the wrong way against traffic -- traveling south along Ingra, which is a one-way northbound street.
The collision is under investigation by APD Major Traffic Collision detectives. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
Editor's note: Anchorage police say the bicyclist's name is Jay McTaggart, not Jay McTagger as listed in an initial press release.
