Nearly All of Alaska Continues Dry

October 11, 2011|By: Mitch Sego | Channel 2 Weather

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Beautiful, sunny weather will persist today for Southcentral and inland Southwest AK.  Northerly winds to 25 mph may develop over west Anchorage and the Matsu as Gulf low pressure and high pressure over the state move closer to one another.  Areas of the northern and western Interior will also see partly to mostly sunny skies.

Highs will range from the teens and 20s along the Slope and Brooks Range to the 30s over the Interior and West.  The southern areas of the state, including Anchorage and the Matsu will be in the 40s, with 50s for the southern SE Panhandle.

At the lower levels, a strong dome of high pressure south of the Aleutians is slowly transitioning eastward.  It links up to another high pressure area over the Arctic Ocean.  Between these two features, (that is, nearly all of mainland Alaska) moisture is being supressed.  Low clouds and patchy fog may persist in Interior valleys this morning, but only a few flurries are expected.

The SE region will continue to be the wet spot, in particular, south of Juneau to Hoonah.  Rain will move northbound around an area of stationary low pressure over the eastern Gulf.
