ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Nome, AK has been beaten by one of the largest storms on record to ever hit the state. The massive storm rolled into the western Alaska town Tuesday afternoon and the blizzard conditions has been keeping communication limited, unless you follow Scott A. Johnson on Twitter that is.

Johnson has been on a tweeting tear covering every aspect of the storm. As @akscojo, Johnson has been keeping followers updated on everything from the cost of bottled water in Nome to the recent power outages.

The closest Channel 2 could get to the storm Tuesday was Unalakleet, where we have reporter Ted Land and photographer Carolyn Hall Jensen. While Unalakleet is being affected by the storm, Nome is seeing the brunt of it.

Johnson’s tweets not only inform followers of what’s happening, but also give them a small idea of what life is like in the storm:

“Weather update: Winds are gusting much more frequently now, and the gusts are longer in duration. Snow is blowing sideways. #akstorm

“Asparagus and corn selling well. Interesting the things people buy when bad weather approaches. #akstorm

“It's blowing so hard, the chandelier in the house is swaying side to side. #akstorm

“Confirmed. Parts have Nome just lost power. I saw a big blue flash in the darkened sky and the street lights are gone. #akstorm

“Way to go Nome Joint Utility System! Power is restored to most of Nome. Mobile phones are working again. #akstorm
