ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska State Troopers have released more information about a Friday collision on the Parks Highway near Wasilla that injured four people and temporarily closed the highway.
AST spokesperson Megan Peters says the crash occurred at Mile 46 of the highway, just north of Church Road near the city limits of Wasilla, at about 2 p.m. A 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV driven by 63-year-old Annie Shangin of Wasilla was headed south when a vehicle ahead of it slowed down to make a left turn.
Shangin lost control on the icy roadway and swerved into the oncoming lane, where her SUV was struck on its passenger side by a 2005 Dodge pickup truck driven by 60-year-old Shirley Lungaro of Talkeetna in a T-bone collision.
The Parks was closed for slightly longer than an hour after the collision as crews worked to extricate the Santa Fe's occupants, including a passenger near the point of impact knocked unconscious in the crash. All of them were taken to the hospital, while Lungaro and her passenger in the pickup were uninjured.
