Small Business Saturday Encourages Shoppers to Stay Local

November 26, 2011|By Jackie Bartz | Channel 2 News

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage businesses were slashing their prices and offering killer deals in an effort to promote "Small Business Saturday."

"A lot of small businesses have things you can't buy at big stores," said Whitney Heskett, the Marketing Manager for Run to the Sun Tanning Salon and Resort Boutique. "There are a lot of benefits to why you should shop small on Small Business Saturday."

Run to the Sun started promoting its deals weeks ago on its Facebook page, as did other stores like Flypaper.

"I think Alaskans have a really wonderful awareness of shopping local," Kim Barrett, Flypaper Owner said.

When customers spend a dollar at a local shop, over 50 percent of the money stays in Anchorage, according to Barrett.

"Shopping local is really important," Flypaper customer Tracy Bolding said.

Mountain View Sports Center made a big push for Small Business Saturday, offering 40 percent off on several high end items.

"Well, I think it's important to give back to the community," said company president John Staser. "We've been here for 50 years, and the only reason we are here is because of the local people."

When customers spend money at Mountain View Sports Center, the company turns around and spends that money locally.

"We support accountants and advertising people, we support lawyers, insurance brokers," said Staser.

This is the second year of the movement that was started by American Express.
