Families of Deploying Soldiers Say Goodbye

Anchorage, AK — A deployment ceremony for friends and family of more than 120 Alaska Army National Guardsmen headed to Afghanistan, was held Saturday afternoon on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Soldiers with the B Company, 1st Battalion, 143rd Infantry Regiment will spend some time in Indiana for additional training, before leaving the U.S. for a year-long tour of duty in Afghanistan in February.

At the departure ceremony, the soldiers and their families were thanked for their sacrifice. Sen. Mark Begich spoke to the guardsmen and shook the hand of each deploying soldier.

The guardsmen are from all over Alaska
