Viral Video Pokes Fun at Anchorage

'Stuff People Say' Phenomenon Targets Locals

January 26, 2012|By Ted Land | Channel 2 News

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The title says it all: “Stuff People in Anchorage (Never) Say.”

“A popular national retail store or restaurant is opening its first location up here?  So?” Brian Dollerhide sarcastically asks in a new YouTube video he produced.

The nearly three minute clip shows Dollerhide wandering around Anchorage making clever remarks about life in Alaska’s largest city.

The video mimics dozens of other viral videos which poke fun at the things certain people always (or in this case never) say. The genre is extremely popular on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

“I’m getting the crack in this windshield fixed immediately,” quips Dollerhide in one scene.

“Oh I know where we can get those shrubs for the yard. It’s called the Bush Company,” he remarks in another.

Dollerhide, who works for The Alaska Club designing its website, posted his video earlier this week and by Thursday it had been viewed nearly 12,000 times.

“It’s pretty validating, everyone seems to like it so far. I’ve taken a little heat, I make a joke in there about Wasilla,” he said during an interview, Thursday. Dollerhide grew up in Wasilla and his parents and brother still live there.

The Anchorage Economic Development Corporation recently awarded Dollerhide’s video the grand prize in its “Live, Work, Play” film competition.

The goal of the competition was to have individual Alaskans showcase what makes Anchorage special to them.

Dollerhide said he and his wife bounced ideas off one another one Friday and came up with enough material to start shooting over the weekend. It took only a few hours to put the whole thing together.

“There might have to be a part 2 video down the road,” he said.
