Anchorage Police Looking for Man After Mountain View Stabbing

January 29, 2012|By Jordana Anderson and Chris Klint | Channel 2 News

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage police are looking for a man in connection with a stabbing in Mountain View early Sunday morning.

According to APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker, a resident of the 800 block of North Flower Street called police at about 2:30 a.m. after a middle-aged man pounded on the door. The caller thought the man -- 56-year-old Thomas Atkinson Jr. -- was having a heart attack, but medics discovered that he had been stabbed multiple times in the back.

Investigators believe Atkinson and his girlfriend were drinking at his home, on the 700 block of North Flower, when two men in their early twenties -- one known to them -- came over and began drinking with them. An altercation began, during which Atkinson was hit and stabbed by one of the men.

Parker says an arrest warrant on charges of second-degree and fourth-degree assault, with bail set at $25,000, has been issued for 21-year-old Richard Smith. He is an Alaska Native male with brown hair and brown eyes who stands 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 155 to 160 pounds.

Anyone with information on Smith’s whereabouts or the stabbing is asked to call APD at 786-8900.
