ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A Mountain View man who was stabbed in the back during a drinking altercation early Sunday died at a local hospital Tuesday morning, according to Anchorage police.

APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker says 56-year-old Thomas Atkinson Jr. was treated by medics and hospitalized after an altercation at Atkinson’s apartment on the 700 block of North Flower Street.

“Atkinson was taken to a local hospital where his injuries were addressed surgically,” Parker said. “Originally the medical staff believed that he would survive his wounds but he died early this morning.”

Investigators believe Atkinson was drinking with and attacked by 21-year-old Richard Smith, who surrendered to police Sunday night and was arrested on charges of second-degree and fourth-degree assault.

An autopsy will be performed on Atkinson’s body to determine the cause and manner of his death.
