Dimond Dominates Service To Win State Hockey Crown

February 11, 2012|by Kevin Wells | Channel 2 Sports

WASILLA, Alaska — The Dimond high school hockey team captured its first state 4A championship in 11 years on Saturday, defeating Service, 6-1 in the title game in Wasilla.  The Lynx, who were 0 for 7 in title games since their most recent crown in 2001, capped off an undefeated season.

Dimond got off to a good start with two goals 10 seconds apart in the opening period. Drake Glover's unassisted goal with 2:51 left in the first bounced off the shoulder of the Service goaltender and in.  Right off the ensuing face off at center ice, Dimond's career points leader Tyler Thompson found Lane Bauer, whose wrist shot found the lower right corner for a 2-0 lead.

Dimond enjoyed another scoring spurt in the second period, with two goals 25 seconds apart.  Josh Larson scored a rebound goal 1:31 into the frame, and Daniel Roberts made it 4-0 on the very next shift.

There was plenty of drama in the Greatland Conference ( state 3A ) championship game, won by Hutchison over Monroe, 3-2 in overtime.

The Hawks' Justin Boots gave his team a 2-1 lead on a power play goal with 1:04 remaining in the third period.  That turned out to be only the beginning of the excitement, however.  Hutchison was barley done celebrating the goal when Monroe's Carson Keys fired a shot from the left point that squeezed through traffic for the tying goal with 43 point 2 seconds left.  The title was decided in the opening minute of overtime, as Boots scored his second goal of the game 50 seconds into sudden death to deliver the title to the Hawks.
