Cold to the North, Snow to the South

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Light snow will continue over Cook Inlet throughout the day. Accumulations will be very minor through the daytime hours. Snow showers may intensify tonight and tomorrow as an upper trough moves through the state. Moisture is still limited with this storm, but with the the surface low in PWS, weak cold air advection and the upper trough combining together through Saturday night, look for at least a couple inches in Anchorage. There is still a threat of 3 to 6 inches through early Sunday morning.

The Valley will see minor accumulations through the weekend. Snow will be heavier in PWS and the eastern Kenai, with 1 to 4 inches today and more tomorrow. Snow and rain may mix in the Cordova area.

Southeast is in for mostly cloudy to cloudy skies and rain and snow showers through the weekend. Temperatures in the state will be warmest here, with 30s and 40s forecast.

Snow will persist this morning in SW. Another couple inches are possible before snow tapers off this evening and shifts eastward. Drier and colder air will make it's return as the upper through shifts to the east and allows cold air pooled up to the north to spill back into the region.

Very cold weather is in store for the Slope once again today. Expect highs from -20 to -35 and wind chills from 30 to 70 below along the Beaufort Sea coast.

If you plan on being out for the ceremonial start of the Iditarod tomorrow morning, you'll be looking at temps near 20 with snow showers possible. Winds will be light, but even occasional breezes downtown can make it feel quite a bit chillier.
