March 29: More Melt Down With Warm Temps Continuing

March 29, 2012|By: Mitch Sego | Channel 2 Weather

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A warm southeasterly flow from the SE Panhandle through Southcentral and into the Southwest, will continue to bring above-average temperatures.  Bering Sea low pressure is weakening and being absorbed into a trough over the Gulf of Alaska.

An emerging area of low pressure over the North Pacific is bringing heavy rain to the Pacific Northwest coast and coastal British Columbia.  It is moving north and will rotate through the Gulf into the weekend and weaken.  Rain is likely over SE today and through the weekend thanks to this low.  Showers of rain and snow will remain a threat in PWS, the Eastern Kenai, Kachemak Bay, Kodiak Island, and around Bristol Bay, as well.

Temperatures are still well below zero along the Arctic coast.  While wamer air is moving through the Interior, it will not be able to pass north of the Brooks Range, so expect more cold and blustery weather along the Slope.

Chilly air continues to swing around the diminishing Bering low into the Aleutians and AK Peninsula.  Highs will only be in the single digits in St. Lawrence Island.  20s and 30s will be spread over the west coast, Pribilofs and Aleutian chain.

Yesterday's warm spot was 54 degrees in Skagway.  Look for more widespread 40s and 50s over southern Alaska as the thaw continues.
